Archbishop Sheen’s Canonization ‘Inevitable’ Amid Growing Devotion, Says Foundation Head - 12/4/2024
(OSV News) — Despite a few high-profile delays in recent years, the canonization of Venerable Fulton J. Sheen — the popular, scholarly archbishop and 20th-century pioneer of Catholic broadcasting — is “inevitable,” said the head of the foundation supporting his cause.
“The desire to see Sheen beatified is increasing, and there is a growing devotion to him,” Msgr. Jason Gray, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation, told OSV News.
In an article for the foundation’s 2024 year-end newsletter, Msgr. Gray — who also serves as the judicial vicar and episcopal vicar for consecrated life for the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, as well as pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Peoria Heights — pointed to several indicators of Archbishop Sheen’s expanding reputation for holiness, or “fama sanctitatis” in canonical terms. ... Dead Theologians Society Brings New Life To Youth Ministry - 12/2/2024
(OSV News) — A youth ministry founded by a former rock drummer is sounding the call to grow closer to Christ by imitating the lives of the saints, and by praying for the souls in purgatory.
“We’re the Church Militant, learning about the Church Triumphant, and we pray for the Church Suffering,” Eddie Cotter, founder and director of the Dead Theologians Society, told OSV News, citing the traditional names of the three states of the church (believers on earth, the saints in heaven and the souls in purgatory).
Established in 1997 as a private association of the faithful, the Dead Theologians Society (the name of which is a spin on the 1989 film “Dead Poets Society,” in which a teacher galvanizes his students through poetry) is open to teens in grades 9-12, as well as young adults age 18-24, with the two age groups meeting separately under adult leadership. Chapters for students in grade 8 can occasionally be formed with permission from the society’s national office, which is based in Wisconsin. ... Read More

Only Love Will Save Humanity, Pope Says In Encyclical On Sacred Heart - 10/25/2024
VATICAN CITY (CNS) - A world that has become "heartless" and indifferent to greed and war, and a Catholic Church in need of revitalizing its missionary joy need to open themselves up to Christ's infinite love, Pope Francis wrote.
By contemplating Jesus' Sacred Heart, the faithful can be filled with the "living water that can heal the hurt we have caused, strengthen our ability to love and serve others, and inspire us to journey together toward a just, solidary and fraternal world," the pope wrote in his encyclical, "'Dilexit nos' ('He loved us'): on the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ."
The Vatican released the 28,000-word text Oct. 24.While it is the pope's fourth encyclical, he wrote that it is meant to be understood in tandem with his previous two encyclicals, "Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home" and "Fratelli Tutti, on Fraternity and Social Friendship." ... Read More
